Ever After High Character Re-root Pack Meeshell Mermaid. DIY Pink Hair!

I remember seeing the first promo photos for the Ever After High Meeshell Mermaid doll. Even though I had never seen the character before, she looked pretty lousy. Weird color choices that didn’t seem to match and she didn’t seem to resemble a mermaid. 12501743_1263344333681520_1492646395_n

And when you compare her to the stills from the show, it is even more dismal. I read a lot of complaints from disappointed collectors. As someone who re-roots all the time, I personally knew I could get her looking more accurate. But I knew most people don’t have the access to all the different shades needed to get that effect in her hair. And then it occurred to me: I could make a custom kit for all the people who want to reroot her too!

What comes in the pack

One thing I have learned in my many years as an artist that people see colors differently. I see a lot of light purple tones in Meeshell’s hair, whereas others see strictly pinks. So how does one put together a re-root pack?

Instead of doing a small amount of hair, I decided that a larger amount of a variety of shades would give artists the chance to reroot her just the way YOU want to!

The kit comes with 5 different shades of hair: baby pink “Pink Floyd,” Coral Pink, “Molly Ringwald,” light purple “Whisper,” silver “Silver Lining” and fuchsia “Bollywood.”

At first glance this might look like a weird color palette. The fun thing about hair is that you can MIX and blend it like paint! It is incredible what colors you create when you blend them together. Silver Lining is my go-to mix color. It may seem out of place, but it lightens most colors that you blend it with. I personally love the effect you can get by using it.

I started my re-root in the back of her head, using a blend of Bollywood, Silver Lining and Whisper. As I worked closer to the front, I started randomly blending in both of the pinks. I took this photo when I was about 50% completed with her, I wanted to see how she looked on her body. 🙂 I loved how she was looking but I wanted more variety of color throughout the whole head.

She turned out quite colorful indeed! I may have may have been a little heavy on the purple, but overall I really like her. And bonus! I still had a bit of leftover hair of all 5 colors so you can use the hair on other projects.

I curled her hair with a 3/8 inch curling iron. It looks good, but I think I want her to have tighter ringlets that are a closer match to her character.

Her re-root is done but her transformation is just at its beginning! 🙂

I had so much fun with Meeshell that I added several other Ever After High re-root packs so that you can create your own OOAK dolls like Sparrow, Lilly Bo Peep & Hopper!

Happy Hairing!
